We investigate the sustainable production and consumption of energy resources in such a way that present needs can be met without compromising the well-being of future generations. We address energy planning, energy transition and decarbonisation scenarios, and the development and application of renewable and efficient energy technologies. We are in direct relationship with the areas of environment and biodiversity to fully involve water, soil, biodiversity and air in our studies.

We investigate the new challenges in the search for a social, economic and ecological balance on a planet with finite natural resources. Here, we look for evidence that allows us to protect nature, take care of water, promote healthy and sustainable eating, support an ecologically sustainable energy transition and eliminate pollution in productive, social and cultural processes.

Biotechnology and biodiversity
We investigate the use of modern biotechnology on the rich biological diversity of countries to assess opportunities for sustainable development. The global South, in general, and particularly the Latin American region, have a biological heritage that is one of the most important in the world. Biological diversity and endemism, as well as animal and plant genetic resources, and the extraordinary body of traditional knowledge on biodiversity, make the Global South a rich source of knowledge for researchers around the world.

Industrial sustainability is possibly the most complex task of these times. In this area, we investigate the industrial balance between the well-being of its employees, the origin of its raw materials and supplies, the social impact with the surrounding communities, the environmental impact of its industrial processes, the quality of its products or services. , and the contribution to the social and economic development of the Latin American region and the Global South.

A different mentality is needed to solve emerging problems in our current society. The diversity in research areas of iiasur and the different ways of thinking of its members facilitate the emergence of innovative ideas. Therefore, this research area seeks to promote and develop new concepts, methodologies, optimization techniques that impact industry and research, as well as the creation of new research areas according to the needs of society and the environment, and the potential of our researchers.

The transition to sustainable mobility involves the use of electricity produced with clean and renewable sources, as well as route planning that optimizes transfers from one point to another. In this area, we investigate the use of hydrogen, the hybridization of the vehicle fleet, route planning, as well as its impact on improving air quality and the quality of life for citizens.
