Andrei Briones-Hidrovo

He carries out transdisciplinary-holistic energy-environmental research, from the perspective of ecological economy and political ecology. He is a mechanical engineer (Technical University of Manabí, Ecuador) with a Master’s degree in Energy Technologies (Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain) and a doctorate (Ph.D) in Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (CIRCE – University of Zaragoza, Spain). His doctoral research focused on developing a methodology to determine the net environmental performance of hydropower, based on a combination of life cycle analysis and ecosystem service assessment. As a complement, he made use of the analysis of emergy and exergy of minerals. This research resulted in a group of biophysical indicators that allow a deeper and more precise analysis of the environmental sustainability of hydropower.

He has done postdoctoral studies both in Portugal (University of Aveiro) and in France (IFPEN) within the framework of national and European projects, on topics such as (dynamic) life cycle analysis, climate change, biomass gasification and combustion, rate of energy return, water and carbon footprint, water-soil-energy nexus, carbon capture, negative emissions technology. In addition, he is a collaborator of the CIRCE Institute, contributing with research on the thermodynamic evaluation of ecosystem services and nature-based solutions, environmental sustainability, and the social valuation of thermodynamics.

His topics of interest: low-carbon energy sources and technologies, life cycle analysis, ecosystem services, nature-based solutions, negative emission technologies, emergy, (eco)-exergy, energy transition, environmental sustainability, circular economy , eco-social metabolism, decrease, Good Living.
